The Height of Your Cabinets

A lot of pre-fabricated homes come with standard height kitchen cabinets which are often about 6 feet from the ground. Most people can easily raise their hand and bring down a cup, plate of mug from it without much trouble; however, there are people that would feel a lot more comfortable with lower cabinets. Imagine you are 5 feet in height and your arm is a foot long, that means you could barely reach the edge of the cabinet much less be able to open a window and let’s not even talk about being able to reach something from it.

Now imagine that you are a housewife thinking of placing ornaments or decorative plates above your
cabinet meaning you will give it a double purpose, the first would be storage of your kitchenware and the second would be some form of a shelf. Many people wouldn’t be able to reach as far as the top of the cabinet to place or replace ornaments there, which could be another reason why a lower cabinet could be useful.

There is an old saying that goes ‘’to each its own’’ meaning that we are all free to make decisions about interior decoration that reflect who we are and how we want our house to look. The question of how high should your cabinet be placed should satisfy you and those living in your house. What is important however is for you to keep a good perspective and a clear understanding of the implications of playing around with the placement and style of your cabinet. This is a choice that is by no means short or medium term, you will probably have the same cabinet for at least over half a decade which should encourage you to be wise about your decisions and take into account that if you’ve got kids who can’t reach, they will grow. If you are short and can’t reach, you can always place a stool under the cabinet (as exhausting as that sounds). The point is, be careful when making long term decisions of interior decoration.

Replacing Your Kitchen Cabinets

Just like with fashion, home design is considered by many as cyclical which is why people constantly make renovations and remodeling to their homes. Because of average durability, one of the rooms that doesn’t get constant upgrades is the kitchen. Kitchen appliances last on average over 5 years and furniture over a decade. Because of the importance of the kitchen ambiance, sometimes people upgrade and improve their kitchens even if the items don’t need replacements. One common example is the cabinet. Cabinets are one of the main features of a kitchen and its style, color and material contribute largely to the design concept. It must match cohesively with the color of the floor, the shape of the fridge, the style of the breakfast island and even smoke extractors. The most common materials for kitchen cabinets are plastic and wood which could probably help explain durability.

When you start to notice that your kitchen looks dull or unappealing, or if your cabinet shows
damage, changing it is a very nice way to go about a kitchen overhaul. It presents home owners with a great opportunity to rearrange specific items, throw away unnecessary pans or plates and install microwaves or glass shelves. Integrating materials like glass and wood is a very nice way to help your kitchen stand out and makes the task of looking for specific items far easier.

Cabinets are a considerable investment so try to have a mental picture of the end result or seek advice from interior decorators. Something that really helps if you can’t afford an advisor is to go online or browse decorating magazines for ideas. Nobody knows the specifics of your home as well as you do so you must put in the effort to make the right decision. Also, try to get your family involved since decorating can be a really fun collective activity.

Redesigning My Mom's Kitchen

When my mother turned 60, she had been living in her house for 20 years and hadn’t made many updates to the interior design. She had always kept the place clean and everything was in good shape, but it looked tired and boring, especially the kitchen. However, being a very practical woman, my mother didn’t see any sense in renovating when everything worked just fine. So one long weekend when my mother went to visit her sister, my brother and I decided to redesign the kitchen using pre-made cabinets.

Actually, we had planned the renovation for about a month. We plugged the measurements of my
mom’s kitchen (which we had taken in secret when she wasn’t at home) into this great website that creates an image of your room with the new cabinets so you can really see how the finished project will look. My mother’s previous cabinets had been so dark that the kitchen looked dreary, so this time we chose a lighter colored wood and picked up a cheery shade of yellow paint for the walls. We had the cabinets delivered to my brother’s house so that my mother wouldn’t suspect anything.

The pre-made cabinets were so easy to install that the three-day weekend was more than enough time to replace the cabinets and repaint the walls. In fact, taking out the old cabinets was more complicated than putting in the new ones! The wood was of a high quality, as promised by the website. We finished the entire project on Monday afternoon, and I could hardly sleep that night, waiting for my mom to come in on Tuesday morning. Her reaction was priceless – her jaw dropped and her eyes widened as she asked if she was in the right house! Even though there was nothing wrong with her old kitchen, my mother admitted that the remodeled version, with beautiful pre-made cabinets, was much better.
